40% of visitors to your website will respond better to visual information than to plan text.  When you do the math for that number and you know that there are about 2,405,518,376 users on the internet that would mean that 962,207,350 more people will respond to images on your website.  But just how well will they be able to view your site?

Monetary consequences for your company.

Your websites visual presence and time to load impacts your bottom line.  With nearly 1 in 10 ecommerce dollars being spent via mobile devices it’s almost impossible to believe that website owners have not had makeovers to their sites to take advantage of responsive technology.

What are the real numbers?

Second quarter results for 2012 show that:

  • 9% of all ecommerce sales were made on tablets and smart phones
  • 1 out of 4 people in the U.S. used only mobile devices to surf the web
  • 60% of users expect a mobile site to load on their device in under 3 seconds
  • 74% of those visitors will leave a website if it has not loaded on their devices after 5 seconds

Loading time of your site

Based on studies of a travel site user experience, it was found that 57% of visitors abandon a site after 3 seconds.  That’s not a lot of time to get your customers attention.  When you take into consideration the time it takes to load your website you can see why Google is now using site load speed as a factor in ranking your website.

If you still don’t think that your business is losing money because of the ability of your website to be responsive to mobile devices, or if you believe that your competitors are also ignoring the facts about how clients and customers are finding, and experiencing, the internet then let’s put a few more numbers on the table.

Every minute of EVERY day:

  • 217 new mobile users access the web with their mobile devices.
  • 2,000,000 search queries are being accessed via Google.
  • $272,070 is spent by consumers on web shopping.
  • 571 new websites are created.

Did I mention that is EVERY minute of EVERY day?

The landscape of online shopping is changing.

Interesting numbers about the spending habits of consumers and how the device they use to view a website is impacting how much they spend.  I’m not sure why this turned out this way but it was interesting enough that I wanted to share the information.

  • 77% of retailers claim that order made from tablets are greater than those made on work or home desktop systems.
  • Tablet user average order size was $123.00
  • Desktop users averaged $102.00
  • Smartphone users are coming in at an average of $80.00

It’s interesting to see that Tablet users are spending 20% more than those people shopping on desktops.

If you have a website that is not built to adjust to the device that your customer is using to visit, then it looks like you are losing a pretty penny in sales.

What do these tablet users say about their experiences online?

2/3 of table owners say that they use their tablets 2 hours a day.  11% are claiming to use them “constantly”.
52% say they prefer to shop on tablets while 40% preferring desktop computers.
The average age group that has the greatest tablet ownership appears to be 18-34 years old.
Tablet owners seem to be mostly male.
29% of tablet owners have an income greater than $75,000.
34% of the tablet owners say they use their tablets for shopping on weekends.
24% say they use desktops.
27% are using Smartphone’s.

Taking a look at the numbers above should be a great motivator for any business owner that’s looking to increase sales.

Still not convinced?

What if I told you that 46% of tablet users claim they would turn to a competitor if they had a poor shopping experience on a website?  If your site is not coded to adjust for the device used to visit then these numbers would indicate that you are losing 46% of the sales that could have been captured.

In closing we should consider how the social media networks combined with the user experience can create a strong business flow.  Ignoring current technology could be the worst mistake any business owner can make.
